From a constitutional view, defence lies under Article 246 (Union List) but philosophically it connects to Article 21 the right to life. Because without security, rights remain theoretical. But When a nation depends on others for its defence, it slowly gives away a part of its freedom. Not openly, not visibly but silently. This is the psychology of dependence. You may have weapons but the control over their supply lies somewhere else. And control, in geopolitics, is everything.
Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence is an attempt to break this invisible chain. It is not just about building weapons; it is about building independent thinking. A nation that produces its own defence systems begins to act with confidence. It stops asking “Will support come?” and starts deciding “What should we do?”
This reflects what can be called the Law of Strategic Autonomy:
A nation is truly sovereign only when its survival does not depend on external supply chains.
.Today, India is actively working on this shift. The government has introduced “negative import lists”, banning the import of hundreds of defence items to push domestic production. Under Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP), priority is given to Buy Indian, Make Indian, and Make in India categories.
The defence industrial base is expanding rapidly:
- Over 16,000 MSMEs and startups are now linked to defence manufacturing
- The iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence) initiative supports startups in AI, drones, and cyber systems
- Corporatisation of Ordnance Factory Board into 7 DPSUs has improved efficiency and accountability
India is also focusing on co-development instead of pure imports:
- Joint projects like BrahMos Missile show how collaboration can coexist with self-reliance
- Increasing FDI in defence (up to 74% automatic route) attracts technology while retaining control
Indigenous platforms like HAL Tejas, INS Vikrant, and advanced systems like Pinaka rockets and Prachand helicopters show that India is moving from buyer to builder.
At the same time, India follows the Law of Balanced Interdependence working with global partners (like US, France) but avoiding critical dependence. This fits India’s “Vishwa Bandhu” vision: cooperation without compromise
.In the end, Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence is not about isolation. It is about ensuring that India stands strong enough to choose cooperation, not depend on it. Because true power is not in weapons, it is in the freedom to decide without pressure.
